Are Lucifer And Satan The Same?

Q

Can you help me with the following question, who is Lucifer or Satan, can you provide me a biblical understanding? I was reading an article and it said Lucifer was only mentioned one time in the Bible but we seem to glean that he and Satan are one in the same?

A

The word Lucifer only appears in some translations of Isaiah 14:12. That’s because Lucifer is a Latin word and Isaiah was originally written in Hebrew. It means “light bearer” and was the Latin translation of the Hebrew phrase Heylel ben Shachar , which means “shining one, son of the dawn”. The way he’s described in Isaiah 14:12-20 and Ezekiel 28:12-18 make it pretty clear that he’s the great enemy of God called the serpent (literally the enchanter) in Genesis 3:1 and Satan in Job 1:6 and other places. Satan comes from the Hebrew haSatan which means “the adversary” so it’s really a title of sorts, rather than a name. Dragon, ancient serpent, devil, and Satan are all used together in Rev. 12:9, speaking of him. Lucifer and Satan are one and the same.
